Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a decrease of approximately 13.2% in vehicle miles traveled nationwide, preliminary data indicates that motor vehicle fatalities across the country increased to a 12- year high of 38,680 deaths, up 6% from 2019.
After a two-year decline, New Jersey recorded 550 fatal collisions in 2020, a 5.8% increase over 2019. Driving While Intoxicated (drugs and/or alcohol) was listed as the contributing factor in 29.5% of those, the highest in two decades.
More than 30% of the 587 lives lost in NJ fatal crashes in 2020 were the result of driving while intoxicated (drugs and/or alcohol), up from a 20-year average of 26.4%.
In 2019, 18% of all fatal crashes involved a driver with alcohol levels higher than the legal standard compared to 11% in 2015.
In 2019, 16% of all fatal crashes involved a driver who tested positive for cannabis compared to 6% in 2015.
