Earlier today, I had the privilege to convene a meeting of law enforcement leaders, LGBTQ+ community leaders and allies from across the state, and members of the Department of Law and Public Safety leadership team, to address security concerns of the LGBTQ+ community ahead of one of the most inclusive celebrations of the calendar year – Pride.

I use the word privilege to describe this meeting intentionally.  It was of course a privilege to be around the table with so many dedicated advocates, colleagues, and friends committed to improving systems of government and public safety for not only members of the LGBTQ+ community, but for all New Jerseyans.  More than that it was a reminder of what a privilege it is to serve in a state where such gatherings are sought out and supported at every level of government.  It is a privilege to lead a law enforcement community here in New Jersey that is committed to building meaningful partnerships with the communities we serve to ensure that all New Jerseyans are comfortable voicing their concerns and feeling safe in our state – regardless of who they love and how they identify.  It is a privilege because that is not true in every state in this great Union.

While there are no specific threats to New Jersey at this time, we are aware of ongoing threats against LGBTQ+ communities around the world.  We know that these threats give rise to fear and concern in all communities, but especially for members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community looking forward to participating in Pride celebrations – and we are taking these concerns seriously. In an abundance of caution, I have directed the New Jersey law enforcement community to take specific steps to exercise heightened awareness and safety planning around our state’s upcoming Pride celebrations.

I know the last few years have been particularly difficult for members of the LGBTQ+ community. This community has felt under attack in big and small ways during these years, and we recognize the importance of coming together in community with one another this Pride.  Please know that as the Chief Law Enforcement Executive in this state, I am working tirelessly to make sure that New Jersey Pride is safe, and all those celebrating feel safe.

New Jersey residents and visitors should know that they need not be alarmed when they see an increased presence of law enforcement around Pride celebrations.  We are taking these steps in an abundance of caution to ensure that these celebrations remain safe and joyful.

For all New Jerseyans planning Pride celebrations, if you have not already been in touch with your local Police Chief and County Prosecutor, please reach out, introduce yourself, provide details about your event, and share your concerns. I have directed them to reach out to your organizations as well. State, county, and local law enforcement is here to support your events and keep New Jersey safe and proud.

Stay safe and happy Pride.
