Paterson Police Department Begins Releasing CompStat Crime Data Reports to Increase Transparency

CompStat Report 

PATERSON — The Paterson Police Department today released its first public CompStat Crime Data report. The report will be posted to the department’s website each week so the public can be informed of the latest crime data in the City of Paterson and keep track of the progress being made under the leadership of Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi to reduce crime and dispel fear and disorder in Paterson.

CompStat is a performance management system that is used to reduce crime and achieve other police department goals. CompStat emphasizes information-sharing, responsibility and accountability, and improving effectiveness. The information is used to make informed decisions on where to position officers to increase presence and minimize response times to crimes.

“CompStat at its core is a performance management system,” said Officer in Charge Abbassi. “By releasing these public reports, it allows one more level of accountability for our department.”

CompStat was first developed by the New York City Police Department in the early 1990s, where it was credited with helping to bring down crime by nearly 60%. Since then CompStat has changed how police agencies view crime problems and helped departments expand their mission to include preventing crimes from happening in the first place.

“Crime data is one important indicator of community safety, and with this launch we hope to inform and enable many more conversations about public safety in Paterson,” said Officer in Charge Abbassi. “We want to continue our dialogue with the people we are sworn to serve and protect and this is an important part of the conversation.”
